Choosing foundation gets easier when you look beyond shade. Think about the finish and coverage you want, how your skin feels during the day, and how much time you like to spend applying makeup. There is no single formula that suits everyone.
Start with what your skin needs
For oily or shiny areas, a light layer of loose mineral powder can give you control over coverage and a more matte look. Apply a little at a time with a kabuki brush, focusing on the T-zone if the cheeks are drier.
For dry skin or visible lines, prepare the skin with your usual moisturiser and let it settle. Liquid foundation may suit you if you prefer a more fluid texture. Powder can also work when applied sparingly with a soft brush over a comfortable base. Avoid rubbing over dry patches.
For visible redness or blemishes, choose buildable coverage and add concealer only where needed. A green colour corrector can visually counter red areas. If your skin is reactive, check the ingredients of each product and try a small area first.
Loose mineral powder, compact or liquid?
Loose mineral foundation
Loose powder lets you build thin layers and adjust the amount of coverage by area. Put a small amount in the lid, work it into the brush, tap away excess and buff gently. Explore our loose mineral foundation.
Compact foundation
A compact is convenient for travel and touch-ups. A brush can give a softer finish; a sponge can add coverage in targeted areas. Mineralissima's 2-in-1 Compact Foundation is a different formula and format from a loose powder refill.
Liquid foundation
Liquid foundation spreads easily with fingers, a brush or a sponge. Start with a small amount in the centre of the face and blend outwards. Build only where you want extra coverage.
How to find the right shade
Compare a few shades along your jawline in natural daylight rather than testing only on your hand. Look for a colour that blends with both your face and neck. Consider the undertone as well as the depth: warm, cool, neutral and olive are useful starting points. See our foundation shade guide and try tester sizes when available.
Make your foundation work for your routine
Apply to clean, prepared skin. Keep the first layer thin, then use more product only where needed. If you prefer a less shiny finish, set selected areas with powder. Compare how the formula looks and feels after several hours, not just immediately after application. The best choice is the one you enjoy wearing.
