PFAS in makeup: what you need to know
PFAS are a large group of manufactured chemicals. Certain PFAS may be used in cosmetics, but they are not required to make makeup. Here is what the term means, why it matters and how to read product information with care.
What are PFAS?
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The group includes many different chemicals with different properties. Many are very persistent in the environment, which is why they are often called “forever chemicals”. It would be misleading to treat every substance in the group as having the same effects.
Why might PFAS be used in cosmetics?
Some PFAS are intentionally added to influence texture, spreadability, appearance or other characteristics of a formula. Their use depends on the specific product and ingredient. Makeup can also be formulated without intentionally added PFAS.
Does all makeup contain PFAS?
No. Formulations vary. A product may contain no intentionally added PFAS, while a different product may use an ingredient from this group. Read the ingredient list and ask the brand about its formulation if you need more information.
Can I spot PFAS on the ingredient list?
“PFAS” is a group name rather than a single INCI ingredient. Names containing “fluoro”, “perfluoro” or “polyfluoro” may be a clue, but the name alone is not a complete test for every possible PFAS. Contact the manufacturer if you have a question about a particular product.
Mineralissima's approach
Mineralissima chooses to formulate its makeup without intentionally added PFAS. This describes a formulation choice; it is not a claim that the products treat a health condition or that any one ingredient label guarantees a particular health outcome. You can review the ingredients on each product page before buying.
What to take away
PFAS are a diverse group of substances. Some are used in cosmetics, but they are not essential to making makeup. If avoiding intentionally added PFAS matters to you, check product information and ask the brand for clarification when needed. Explore our foundation range and its individual ingredient lists.
