Understanding the basics

Why does your foundation shade change with the seasons?

Your skin gets more sunlight in summer, even when you use sun protection. Your complexion may become a little darker or deeper, while in winter your natural skin colour often becomes lighter again.

Your undertone stays the same, but you may need to adjust your foundation shade or coverage for a natural result. A summer shade can look too warm or too dark in winter, while a winter shade can look washed out in summer.

Check your current shade first.
Compare your foundation along your jawline with your neck in daylight. A new season doesn’t automatically mean you need a different shade.

For the seasons in between

What should you do in spring and autumn?

For much of the year, most people’s skin colour sits somewhere between their summer and winter shades. Neither deeply tanned nor very fair, but somewhere in between.

Many of our customers combine two shades to make the transition between seasons easier. Here are a few ways to do it:

01 / MIX YOUR SHADES

Create your in-between shade

Mix your summer and winter shades: our mineral powders are easy to blend together in a small pot. Or mix liquid foundation on a palette until you find the right shade.

02 / ADD WARMTH

Work with two shades

Use your winter shade as your base, then use your summer shade to add warmth or contour.

03 / LIGHT LAYERS

Build up gradually

Use your winter shade as your base and lightly layer your summer shade over it. Apply the summer shade with a fluffy brush in a thin, airy layer across your face. This adds subtle warmth without looking heavy or too dark.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need a darker foundation in summer?

Not necessarily. Compare your current shade along your jawline with your neck in daylight. Only change your shade if your skin colour has actually changed.

How can I find my foundation shade online?

Compare the shade descriptions and undertones. If you’re unsure, test several shades along your jawline and check them in daylight. Testers are available for several of our foundations.
